Scholastic Princess /Pirate Potty Books and Boon Potty Seat Giveaway

{CLOSED}

Getting ready to start the potty training process this year? We will be shortly, and I've come to find out that Allie doesn't want any part of it. Both of my boys were starting out at this age, but Allie just won't have it. For the time being, we're busy reading the Princess Potty book from Scholastic to help ease her transition from diapers to "big girl" panties.

Whether you've got a little princess or pirate, Scholastic has created a book with rewards to motivate your little one to use the potty. Both books provide a helpful, step-by-step story that introduces girls & boys to the concept of toilet training. Pirate Potty is a pirate-themed, toilet-training book that is fit for the little swashbuckler in your life!  Includes a pirate’s hat and reward stickers! Princess Potty follows the same theme…a toilet-training book that is fit for the Royal Highness in your life!  This book includes tiara and reward stickers!

Toilet-Training Tips:
  • Use the rewards to celebrate your child's toilet triumphs
  • Teach your toddler to let you know when they have to go
  • Create a routine that gets your child comfortable with the potty
  • Read through the Pirate/Princess book to help explain the process of using the bathroom
  • Always give your child praise in their efforts

Even if your child isn't ready to learn yet, the potty books will introduce them to the process in a fun storybook adventure. I love the little tunes sung in the book. My older boys got a laugh out of it, which motivates Allison even more.

Both potty books from Samantha Berger can be purchased at Amazon.com for $5.99 each.

Giveaway
One Grand Prize winner receives a Prize Pack including:
Two First Prize winners receive:
  • Copy of both books!

This giveaway is open to all US residents and will end February 15. The books featured were provided free of cost to me for the sole purpose of this review. Opinions expressed are my own and are NOT influenced by monetary compensation.

Groundhog Day Family Activities

There is only one day during the year that is devoted to rodents. On February 2nd, the iconic rodent, Punxsutawney Phil, comes out of hiding and tells the world if there will be six more weeks of winter. Groundhog Day is a day for all rodents – whether mice, chipmunks, or rats – to step up and celebrate. Phil may be the star of the day, but there are many talented rodents that we all have grown to know and love.

To celebrate the wonder of rodents everywhere, there are many things that families can do together on Groundhog Day that will be fun, exciting, and educational about rodents. After watching Phil look for his shadow, families can tune in to see the world’s most famous rodent, Mickey Mouse, on the Disney Channel, watch the movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray or Pixar’s Rattatoullie, and play Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel video game. These are just a few of the many ways to pay homage to these pesky critters.

Fun Facts from Groundhog.org:

  • The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs from 12 to 15 pounds.
  • A groundhog can whistle when it is alarmed. Groundhogs also whistle in the spring when they begin courting.
  • Groundhogs are one of the few animals that really hibernate. Hibernation is not just a deep sleep. It is actually a deep coma, where the body temperature drops to a few degrees above freezing, the heart barely beats, the blood scarcely flows, and breathing nearly stops.
  • Young Groundhogs are usually born in mid-April or May, and by July they are able to go out on their own. The size of the litter is 4 to 9. A baby groundhog is called a kit or a cub.
  • A groundhog's life span is normally 6 to 8 years.
For fun activities to do with your kids, visit http://www.groundhog.org/teachers/activities/ . These cupcakes would be a yummy mid-week treat to celebrate(hopefully the arrival of spring!)

Alvin & the Chipmunks The Squeakquel the Video Game

Everyone’s favorite musical acts, Alvin and The Chipmunks and The Chipettes, their friendly girl-group rivals, are on a world tour featuring performances by each band and including duets, to break attendance records and build up their fan bases. Musical sparks are ignited as The Chipmunks and The Chipettes square off, jet around the world and perform together in the ultimate concert finale at Hollywood’s Super Duper Dome.

We were recently sent the new Alvin game for the Wii. I let Caleb, my oldest, play by himself first. Playing is much like the Dance Revolution games at the arcades, you just use your hands to match the arrows. It looked simple enough to me. Ha, not so, it speeds up when your the one playing. Needless to say, I didn't beat Caleb, but that's nothing new. :) Allie adores the Chipmunks, and tries to mimic their dancing! This game will get you moving! And, it is a lot of fun.

You can play as the Chipmunks or their female counterparts, The Chipettes in a battle of the bands world tour. Gain enough fans, and you'll travel through 25 cities in the Wii edition. It's a fun, entertaining game for all ages with songs like "U Can't Touch This" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun".

Alvin and The Chipmunks The Squeakquel Wii Game retails for $39.99 and can be purchased online at Amazon or at game retailers nationwide.

The product(s) featured were provided free of cost to me for the sole purpose of this review. Opinions expressed are my own and are NOT influenced by monetary compensation.

V-Tech V.Smile Motion Active Learning Game System

Get kids moving with the V.Smile Motion. Make learning letters and numbers fun! V.Smile Motion Active Learning System is a breakthrough game console created for the younger child. V.Smile Motion combines wireless, motion activated play and educational learning into a system that plugs into your TV. It's much like the Wii.

When the boys got a Wii, Allie just had to play too. She can "play" some games, but most of the time she just gets frustrated. The V.Smile is perfect for her. She is just learning how to play video games, and the games specifically designed for toddlers and preschoolers are perfect to help her learn how to manipulate the controller and the game itself.

V.Smile Motion Active Learning System Features

  • Wireless, motion activated joystick is also for left-handed or right-handed children
  • This learning system is 100% compatible with the entire V.Smile Smartridge library
  • Use V.Link to track your scores and earn bonus online games
  • Comes with Action Mania sampler Smartridge

The V.Smile Motion has several favorite characters available for all ages. Winnie the Pooh, Care Bears, and Scooby-Doo are my kids favorites. Some games are made for kids Caleb's age (7) that introduce him to new words, and practice his addition and subtraction skills.

We had the original V-tech when Caleb was still toddling around. The games from back then will play in the new V.Smile Motion. But, you'll have to play them manually, by the buttons. These are much harder for Allie to play. She doesn't like to be told what button to push or when to, so she enjoys the V.Smile Motion games best.  They also have some new ones out to keep up with kid's changes like Disney Fairies, Pixar’s Up!, Handy Manny, and Ni Hao Kai Lan.

The is one thing I do not like about the V-Tech gaming system. My old one, the original V.Smile, ate batteries like crazy, even when the system hadn't been played for a while. We were changing batteries once a week, and when we got the battery cord, it wouldn't work half the time. This one eats batteries pretty quickly too.

You can use the V.Link to track scores and earn bonus online games at www.vsmilelink.com. The "Action Mania" Smartridge comes included with the console. It's a great feature that lets you and your kids track their progress.

V.Smile Motion is available at Amazon.com for $49.98 and at retailers nationwide. Follow the V-Tech Mom, Pilar Clark, on Twitter @VTechToys to keep with the latest news on V-Tech products.

National Puzzle Day Fun from Hasbro

When was the last time you sat down to solve a puzzle? Now’s your chance! Tonight, January 29, also known as National Puzzle Day, puzzle-lovers across the country will solve puzzles of all shapes and sizes.

While famous for board games and toys, Hasbro is also one of the world’s largest producers of puzzles, distributing more than eight million each year. Hasbro, which manufactures many puzzles locally in East Longmeadow, Mass., encourages families to join in the excitement of National Puzzle Day by kicking off their weekend with an affordable night of puzzling.

“Puzzling has been a favorite American pastime for many generations,” said Margaux Rossouw, Global Marketing Manager for puzzles at Hasbro. “Hasbro continues to introduce innovative designs to captivate a widespread audience. From nine pieces to 1,500 pieces, and with fresh scents, scenic views or favorite cartoon figures, we offer a fun challenge for puzzlers of all ages and capabilities.”

Puzzles are a great way to reinforce concentration and reasoning skills, while also promoting teamwork. For adults, puzzles might help reduce stress and provide some “exercise” for the brain. For children, puzzling is an educational and enjoyable experience that promotes social interaction.

For those planning to celebrate National Puzzle Day, puzzling doesn’t have to be a short-lived activity around a quiet kitchen table. Incorporate puzzling throughout the day. To remind family members about the evening’s entertainment, Moms can write notes on puzzle pieces and include in lunch boxes or briefcases. Try spicing up the family dinner by using puzzle pieces as place cards or serving cookies in the shape of puzzle pieces. And to encourage as much Friday night entertainment as possible, solve a puzzle in front of a family movie or play some music that everyone enjoys. Challenge everyone in your family to just complete ONE piece of the puzzle – after that, they’ll be hooked.

When selecting a puzzle for National Puzzle Day, consider Hasbro’s best-selling BIG BEN collection. From landscapes to vibrant images of wildflowers, the 1,000-piece puzzles have been entertaining families for more than 65 years.

For the little ones, the canister puzzles feature larger puzzle pieces with toy figures from the kid-favorite Hasbro properties of Littlest Pet Shop and Transformers. TIME FOR US puzzles are perfect for parents and kids to solve together. These 300-piece puzzles, featuring images of puppies, teddy bears and dinosaurs, have large pieces for little hands and smaller pieces for big hands.

Even after National Puzzle Day is over, continue the fun by setting aside a regular night for puzzling as a family. Hasbro puzzles are available for an approximate retail price of $2.49 - $14.99 and many are made with sustainable materials such as soy-based ink and recyclable cardboard. For additional information about Hasbro puzzles or games, please visit www.hasbro.com.

Eco-Friendly, Electric Bikes at Pedego

With the rising (and falling) of gasoline prices, families are looking for alternative methods of travel. For short errands, an electric bike can get you where you need to be in a short amount of time. It costs less than the over-sized SUV your family needs for certain outings, and is much more friendly to our environment.

So, what exactly is an electric bike? It's more than your average bike, not quite a scooter or motorcycle, but it offers some advantages of both. It can be used just like a bike with pedaling alone, but with the electric battery power kicked in, you can travel up to 20 miles per hour.

Pedego offers a variety of electric bikes to fit your needs and budget. To learn more about Pedego's electric bicycles, visit them online at http://www.pedegoelectricbikes.com/ .  You can also connect with Pedego on Twitter @PEDEGO and Facebook.

Another Ultrasound, Upcoming MRI and Surgery

I'm finally getting answers to my health problems. I went to the Emergency Room this weekend for my bleeding, which has gotten out of control. The double dose of birth control pills have not been working, and it's only gotten worse.

I had two ultrasounds, and something finally showed up. I have a foreign object in my uterus, which I'm assuming is part of the IUD that I had taken out. I've got swelling and inflammation around it, which the doctor thinks my uterus is growing around the object.

It's actually such a relief to finally get some answers. I'm having an MRI this Thursday to see exactly what it is. Then, more than likely, I'll be having surgery in the coming weeks.

I've decided to take a break. I've been so exausted lately, I barely have the energy to get out of bed, but I'll be posting off and on about what's going on. I've been extremely emotional and bitchy lately, and hope it will all go away after this is taken care of. Don't forget about me, I will be back! :)

Finally Heading in the Right Direction-Another ER Trip

I made a trip to the Emergency Room this morning because of the flare-up of pain I've been having since Saturday morning. I think I might finally have something to go on as I saw a doctor who has never looked at me before. He listened to what's going with me and believes I could very likely have Lupus.

All my problems are pointing towards that. Since it is my joints, and he says Fibromyalgia affects the muscle, and my skin rashes are also a symptom. No doctor has ever even mentioned that to me until today.

I'm glad I might have an answer to something finally. Even though Lupus seems to be more scarier and possibly life-threatening, I finally have something to call this. As soon as I found out, my parent's started googling it, and found quite a bit about it.

I'm quite scared in a way, but optimistic at the same time. I'm hoping this week I will get some definite answers.

Remembering Karissa

Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.

My condolences to family and friends who knew Karissa. Even though I've only talked to you on occasion and didn't know you well, your loss is still heart-breaking. I only wish I could have known you more. May you rest in peace now.

My Visit With the Doctor

Just got home from my doctor appointment to find out the results of my tests. I've anxiously awaited this day since last month. There was hope I would find out what was causing all this.

Sitting in the doctor's office with my mom and Allie, I'm optimistic that some of my questions will finally be answered. She comes in and tells me all my results come back NEGATIVE. I don't have arthritis. No resolve there.

I tell her about my bleeding. My severe cramping and dizziness and nausea and fever I've been having. The pills I'm on from the ER doctor to stop it.

She tells me I need to wait it out another 2 months and then talk to her. WTF?! How the hell would you feel if you bleed everyday of your life? Couldn't sleep at night because of so much pain?

I ask for a referral to a pain management doctor to maybe diagnose something. No, she says, I don't need one. I'm perfectly FINE. With our insurance, you have to have a referral to a specialist.

Quite frankly, I'm upset and frustrated as hell. I called my husband crying that I can't do anything. I can't imagine myself at 30 if this keeps on going. I can't even run with my kids. And, you tell me that's normal for a 20 year old?

My husband thinks it's time to find another doctor. Everyone in my family who sees me knows something is not right.

I've gone downhill the past few months. It makes me feel like I'm crazy in a way. I don't even know where to go from here.

WTF Is Wrong? Test Results Revealed Tomorrow

Life hasn't been the best for me the past few months. Not being able to do the normal day-to-day tasks has been frustrating and I often get a little depressed about what's going on with my body.

First, I'm being tested for rheumatoid arthritis. My body hurts, especially me knees and ankles. Other days it'll be my shoulders, elbows, or back to where it inhibits the tasks I have to do daily.

Last month a huge knot came up on the back of my ankle. I didn't think anything of it until it started turning red and purple, and I could barely walk on it. With my doctor being out of town, I had to go to the ER, where I was told I had tendinitis. After a month and my anti-biotics finished, it hasn't improved, in fact, it's worse than ever.

I have another problem that sent me to the ER twice during the holidays. I started the Depo shot and bled for 6 months straight. I was using it until I could get an IUD. Well, after one month of having severe abdominal cramping and heavy bleeding, I had to have my IUD removed.

Finally, I quit bleeding. For all of 3 days. It came back full force and hasn't stopped yet. I've had numerous dizzy spells, along with vomiting and a fever off and on for over a month. Finally on my last trip to the emergency room, the doctor gave me birth control pills to try and regulate my hormones. I'm taking double the normal dose, and my bleeding has slowed down, but still hasn't gone away.

It's extremely frustrating when you know something is wrong, but no one can figure it out. I've gone through several blood and urine tests and and ultrasound. Everything comes back normal. But, I don't feel normal. I'm 22 and I feel like I'm 50. I can't run and play with my kids, and sitting on the floor to play is ungodly painful. It seems like I'm living off pain pills to get me through my day, which don't even help on my bad days.

I'm hoping my doctor can finally give me some answers tomorrow. If not, what the hell do I do?
