CLOSEDAvery Back to School Organization and Giveaway

Avery has recently partnered with Box Tops for Education! Now when you buy school supplies, you can clip the Box Tops for money for your school. If you don't know what Box Tops are, they're basically money for your school to use towards new supplies, fund programs, or buy much-needed equipment.

Avery has also teamed up with Jodie Watson, founder and president of Supreme Organization and the organizational expert from TLC’s “Real Simple. Real Life.”, to help you in getting everything organized with tips geared towards each grade level.

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

  • Create a binder to house the best of your child’s school work as they go through the school year. Use a template to create the front cover and spine of the binder with your child’s name, school, year, etc. Use dividers to make sections for homework, artwork, certificates of recognition, awards, projects, etc. Keep papers inside sheet protectors so the work will stay in good condition. Take pictures of any larger artwork or projects they make and place the photo in the binder. Photos can be printed as large as 10’x8” for best viewing. At the end of the school year, you will have a completed binder with all their best work.

Use permanent markers to write your child’s name and a contact number on their backpack & lunchbox in case they get lost or left at school

3rd – 5th Grade

  • Place a dry erase calendar where you and your child can see and reach it. With a marker write down all the upcoming school dates for the year – school breaks, events, field trips. As you go through the year, use the calendar to track project due dates and help your child to schedule in the days they will be working on long term homework assignments in order to complete them on time. Calendar can also include play-dates, parties, doctor’s appointments, and sports or dance lessons. This is a great way to introduce your child to project management at an easy to understand level. If you have more than one child, use a different color marker for each one to easily differentiate between their schedules.

6th – 8th Grade

  • Help your child create a fully personalized, unique binder with Avery Signature Binders to organize their work for the upcoming school year. They could use one binder to hold all of their class work or individual binders for each class they will be taking. Use dividers to create separate sections for each course or class, such as: history, math, science, and/or create separate sections within each class, such as: notes, assignments, handouts, etc. Label each divider with a permanent marker or print labels on your computer so you can clearly see which section is which. Insert a copy of your child’s class schedule into a sheet protector and place at the front of the binder. For each class make a cover sheet with the class name, teacher, room number, location, days/times of classes. Place the class info cover sheets into sheet protectors and insert into the binder at the front of the section for that particular class.
  • Encourage your child to use a highlighter to empathize important content while taking class notes or on handouts. This will help them to find relevant content later on when they are studying.

I'm Leaving My Husband, For Good This Time

I've given my husband numerous chances to change. Throughout our marriage, he's disappeared for days at a time, worked and spent all his money on alcohol and who knows what else. I can go on and on about all the terrible things he's done, but it's really not worth it anymore.

Last night, he took about $200 that I've been saving for my son's birthday. I got up around 4 to find he wasn't in bed. I came out, the back door was cracked, he's no where to be found. Then I discover all my money is gone. He's home when I wake up. He can't even tell me where the money has gone, or what it was for.

This is the last draw. I'm tired of dealing with an irresponsible man who really is still just a teenager. I can't be married to someone I can't trust anymore. I've been in a relationship like this before, and it took what seemed like forever to get out of. After his accident, he claimed he was a changed man, but I naturally had my doubts. Slowly, he's gone back to the old Brandon, and this just takes the cake.

I don't want him back in my house. I don't even want to look at him. This morning, I told him he needs to find someone to come get him. And, Caleb's birthday is this Friday. This is the kind of man I've dealt with for much longer than I should have. Everyone has said to give him a chance, and this is what I get.

I don't really have anyone but him and my family. That's whats made it so hard to leave in this relationship, and my last one as well. But, I don't deserve this, my kids especially don't. We're struggling anyways, what kind of person takes the only money saved for his child's birthday? Obviously not a man I want to be with. What the hell is he teaching my boys? This is not how you treat your wife and kids.

The First Week of School

This week was the first week of school for my boys, Caleb and DJ. I thought it was going to hard to get us back into the school routine, especially bedtime and waking up. It hasn't really been a problem though, somedays my daughter wakes up to say her bye-byes, but sometimes she'll sleep until 8 if I'm lucky!

DJ went into kindergarten this year. After a rough year in pre-k, he seems to be doing great so far. Last year, he was sent home numerous times for acting up and throwing tantrums that lasted for hours. He also has had a hard time in learning and focusing, but we'll see how he can do this year.

Caleb went into 1st grade. He's got his own desk this year, which is a new change from the typical round tables in the younger grades. He's a smart boy, and I hope he'll make all A's. I know he can do it, he doesn't think so though. He'll be studying for his first spelling test this coming week.

Everything has gone pretty well. My daughter has no idea what to do without the boys around though! She normally loves to be outside all day, but with just me to play with, I guess I'm not as fun as the boys are, because all she wants to do is swing. But once the boys get home, it's a mad house, which means we're back to normal.

Me and my hubby went out by ourselves last night, which is VERY rare. We went out to eat at Smokey Joe's and then hit the movies. He convinced me to watch Final Destination. It was in 3-D which made it very bloody and gorey, I had to look away several times. It was okay, but just like the first two. If you want to see it, I'd say just rent it. The ending was pretty dull too. I hate that!

I'm preparing for Caleb's birthday, which is September 4, this Friday. He'll be 7 years old. He just have to have a Lego birthday, so we've got to find someone who can make an awesome cake. He's going to be really shocked about the gift from his grandparents, they are getting him a Wii! I'm excited too, maybe I can start getting a workout in! :)

There's an exciting new book series and online world for little girls soon to come. The Fairy Godmother Academy Birdie's book has just been released August 25th, and in celebration, I've got a Fairy Godmother Academy Hello Dreamer party kit along with the first book of the new series.

Back to School Promoting Healthy Bodies

The back to school season brings on fun, excitement, homework, extra activities, and inevitably the dreaded runny noses and sore throats. One item not included on my boys school supply list this year that should have been is hand sanitizer.

CNN actually discussed the issue this month. Due to the prediction the H1N1 (Swine flu) virus could return with wider distribution in the fall, kids now more than ever need to scrub their little hands more often.

Do you work? Who will take care of the kids when their sick? Today, the vast majority of all household have two parents in the labor force, yet nearly half of all private-sector working people aren't allowed to earn a single paid sick day for themselves or to care for their children. With more and more people living paycheck to paycheck to make ends meet, many simply can't afford to lose a day's pay, or even their jobs, when they have to stay home sick or to care for sick kids.

MomsRising.com is asking for moms and dads alike to sign this petition to allow all employees to earn paid sick days. Help our economic security and our public health by helping take part in the effort.

Kids A Mess? Win Deck of Chores Card Game for Your Family!

I have two messy boys that take after their dad when it comes to cleaning up after themselves. Don't even mention the word chores in my house! My hubby and oldest son, Caleb, are the biggest slobs I've ever seen. I haven't really a problem with DJ and Allie helping out though. Cleaning is not fun for Daddy and Caleb!

I discovered Deck of Chores on twitter one day and just had to know more. Caleb loves games, so I figured something like this just might work! Deck of Chores comes with 52 playing cards filled with the typical chores such as laundry, dinner time tasks, etc, but it also comes with 4 blank cards to add in your own wants and needs.

The game also comes with basic instructions, but you can play any way you choose. We all, hubby too, pick 4 cards that we have to finish during the week. Our boys are on the younger side, so I figured 4 activities would be great for them, and would allow some slack for extra time-filling activities. At the end of the week, DJ and Caleb get their allowance if they have finished their work.

You can purchase your own Deck of Chores at http://www.deckofchores.com/ for $14.99. You can also enter to win one for your house at Mission Mommy starting now too!

GIVEAWAY
One lucky reader can win a deck of chores for their family. Here's how you can enter.

Required Entry: Sign the Deck of Chores guestbook and Mission Mommy sent you.
Deck of Chores has recently redone their website, so instead of signing the guestbook, you can just skip this part if your not getting the page. Sorry for the confusion!

Back to School in Style with Adidas

Finding a comfortable shoe that will last is not easy. One of my favorite brands for back to school is Adidas. I wore them in high school, along with other famous brands as well, but none were as comfy as Adidas. Already in stores, the Tech L2 combines comfort, style, and affordability.

Buying a good shoe that lasts is worth more in the long run. At $75, this might be high, as I've thought before considering my kids are younger. But, I've never had any luck with most inexpensive shoes. I've bought numerous pairs throughout the year. Adidas will last!

Adidas Tech's give you that extra comforting you need in any situation. The Tech L2 will be available in boy’s and men’s sizes in two color ways: white/black/silver/neon green and black/true blue. You can find them only at Famous Footwear stores or you can visit them online at http://www.famousfootwear.com.

Summer Fun 411

It’s a common question for parents of school age children: how to keep the love of learning alive outside the classroom? Luckily thriftymomma is here to help with simple backyard science experiments that are fun for all ages and good any time of year.

With two crafty, active, school age little girls I am always looking for things to challenge them. Ironically my five-year-old gave me this idea one morning when she pulled a variety of ingredients from our cupboards and started concocting a mess she dubbed an experiment. A half dozen broken eggs later and a mess of glop that started out as vinegar, water and baking soda and I realized I needed to get creative. Necessity is after all the mother of invention. Together we came up with a variety of fun, inexpensive experiments to fill those moments when their attention wanders and busy hands turn into instruments of mass destruction.

On my blog http://www.thriftymommastips.blogspot.com the Summer 411 entries have been very popular. In the spirit of Bill Nye the science guy we took an afternoon shopping trip early in June and loaded up on ingredients for experiments. We went a little crazy and spent about $50 on a variety of tools – watch for new experiments weekly documented and photographed by us. The feature has been so popular we’re going to keep it going through the fall and winter months. Some of the experiments that have been most fun for us take little more than baking soda and vinegar. While a few of these may appeal to preschoolers, I recommend them for age five and up. The easiest of these we discovered in a booklet produced by the Ontario Early Years Centre in London, Ontario.

1. Diet coke mentos geyser. (I can’t get enough of this one - a really simple trick kids love) In the middle of your backyard or in an open field take one large bottle of diet coke, a ¼ cup of dishwashing soap (Sunlight or other) and one package of mentos. Open the pop bottle, add the liquid soap and carefully try to drop all mentos into the bottle at once. (You may only get 5 or so in before it explodes, so look out and step back.)

2. Naked egg. Take one egg straight from the fridge and put it in a clear cup. Cover the egg with vinegar. Have your children watch and document the change. Leave for 24 hours. Carefully dump the vinegar and replace with fresh. Document changes. Leave for another 24 hours, replace vinegar one more time and watch what happens.

3. Baking soda volcano. A big hit! Take food colouring, baking soda, water, dish soap and vinegar and an empty bowl with empty pop bottle inside it. Use a funnel to pour water and dish soap mix into bottle until 3/4s full. Add baking soda. Add food colouring. Red makes it look like lava. Add vinegar and watch it explode. (This experiment can also be used to explain angry feelings to little kids. I’ve seen this done well with child as the bottle and ingredients as feelings that spill over until they explode.)

Happy experimenting!

Rosie Hippo Blog Tour

Rosie Hippo began with a couple's love for natural, earth friendly toys. Some might call it the "old school" type toys where children are encouraged to use their imagination, something many toys on the market today don't feature. Kim Bloom purchased the company in 2008, due in part to her son's budding curiosity and her knack for child development.

About Rosie Hippo in Kim's(not mine!) Words
"At Rosie Hippo, you will find beautifully handcrafted wooden toys, toys made from organic fabrics, toys from individuals, companies, villages and cooperatives around the world, and books and games that stimulate creativity and independent thought. We offer toys that we hope will become family heirlooms….toys that will evoke a sense of fun, curiosity and wonder for that special little one in your life. All of our toys are produced under conditions that are fair to workers and kind to our environment. "

I also want to mention a little about the owner, Kim Bloom. She left the corporate world to focus on parenting and running her own toy boutique after surviving cancer. She has a devoted commitment to cancer, children's, and environmental foundations.

Alligator Pull Toy
Age Group
: Toddler
Materials: Wood
Price: $20

Thanks to Buzz Mommy and Rosie Hippo, my daughter now has a new little toy to pull around. We always call it Allie the Alligator. As some of you know, my daughter's name is Allison. When you pull the alligator around, it makes a little clackety-clack sound. This toy is also very sturdy, my two boys have played with it many times, and it hasn't broken! Caleb and DJ are your typical rough housing boys who don't keep most toys in great condition for very long!

CLOSED Eden Fantasys $50 Gift Card Giveaway

This post is intended for adults only!

Eden Fantasys is an online shop and community where you can learn from others, share experiences, and take intimate moments with your spouse to a whole new level. From the most discreet through the kinky items, you can find something that will meet your needs.

Not just a sex toy shop, you can find sexy lingerie to wow your hubby, lotions and massage oil to relax, and erotic videos and books for any style. I enjoyed the kit I received, but I think my hubby has had much more fun with it!

I'm a little shy when it comes to talking about sex. I'm not going to go in to detail in my review, this is a family friendly site. It has been fun experimenting with new things with my husband. It can spice up your sex life as well.

Eden Fantasys also has a magazine called Sexis, which relates to all things sexual. You can find health related articles, sex in the media, as well as a green living section! You can also stay up to date on the latest news and deals at the Eden Cafe blog.
