She's 18...with 4 Kids!

I first saw this story on MomLogic and since I'm a young mother wanted to have my say in this story too. If you take a look at the comments, most are naturally putting this little girl down. I call her a little girl because she is. She's had children, many for her young age, and has no idea what the real world is like. I'm not much older and am certainly not claiming that I do. I feel sorry for her in a way.

When I was young, I did some obviously stupid things that I shouldn't have been doing. I had my first child just before my 15th birthday. I was in no way ready for a baby, but I prepared myself for what was to come, and read every "pregnancy manual" I could get my hands on. I was nervous, scared, excited all at the same time. Being at the age I was, I wanted to get an abortion, to not have the baby and never let my parent's find out. Thankfully, those plans never happened and I get to hug and kiss my now 6 year old son everyday.

I've learned from those events in my early life. I will never call them mistakes, they were in no way planned, but I can't bring myself to calling my children mistakes. Mistakes you regret. My son made me grow up, grow up very fast. I wanted to graduate. I was entering the 9th grade with a newborn! I attended classes that I could work at my own pace, and within a year and a half, received my high school diploma.

Years passed, and I had two other children. All "Whoops!" babies, to which I contribute my birth control methods gone wrong. But, they are all a blessing. I've finally found a birth control method that will work now and in the future. I want to finish college and become an elementary school teacher. If you know me personally, you know I have a unique bond with any child I meet. I feel it's my calling.

I know many young mothers out there are not good mothers at all. Some will never even help in raising that child. They'll live the party life-style, adding drugs and alcohol to their life, which is no place for a mother to be in. Most moms my age that I know personally are just that. But a select few will be great mothers. Better than those who were 35 when they had their first baby. I think each and everyone of us is different, and should not be judged based on stereo-types alone.

I have a young daughter (just 2), but will one day have "that talk" with her. I want her to be able to talk to me, and I will put her on birth control if the need arises. Kids are going to have sex, there is no doubt about that. Just telling them not to more than likely will not do the job. My boys will also learn about safe sex, and to always use protection no matter what. I will push abstinence, but I will always assume the worst. During this day and age, I think you have to.

Suck On This - The Great Paci Debate

My oldest son, Caleb, never had a security blanket or stuffed animal to carry with him everywhere. Those were just materialistic things to my first born. His love was his pacifier. From birth until his 3rd birthday, I daily had to clean and hunt for them. If something went wrong, he needed it. If he was bored, you bet he enlisted me to help him search.

I eventually had to make a rule on the binky. It was only allowed in the bedroom. For babies, it's cute. But not for a rowdy, playful toddling little boy. I tried my best to wean the habit, but nothing seemed to work. Until one day I came across an article in a parenting magazine in the doctor's office.

Getting rid of a child's beloved pacifier can be hard. It gives them security and comfort, just like a favorite teddy bear or snuggly blanket. But, it's rumored that it can cause unsightly damage to your child's teeth among other problems. I believe it caused the small cavities my son had in his front two teeth, but it's not proven. My other two kids never used a paci, and have perfect pearlies.

If your trying to lose that binky for good with no luck, you might want to try what worked for my family. We tried numerous attempts before the "Paci Fairy" came to our rescue. One day at nap time, I explained to my son that he was getting to be a big boy and that a special fairy would be giving him a visit. He had to put his paci under the pillow, just like you do with the tooth fairy in later years to come. :) The fairy left a few cool little small items for him when he woke up.(I picked up from the dollar store. One was an actual tiny fairy, which he(okay, I) still has!)

Be sure to not leave any pacifier within reach. Your child will be sure to find it and take back up the habit. It actually worked, he did ask a few times, but I never went out to buy another one again!

Be sure to watch the Great Pacifier Debate courtesy of JuiceBox Jungle!

The Infamous PR Backout

If your a blogger, I'm sure you've heard of what I'm talking about. On August 10-16, many bloggers who have joined the bandwagon in working with companies and posting about them will for this one week, will just say NO. They'll take back their blogs. No reviews. No giveaways. Trisha of MomDot originally started this when conversation arose on this topic with several bloggers who are just overwhelmed with all surrounding PR.

Trisha has done a lot of work with the MomDot community, as well as Blogger's Give and Pitch Bloggers. She's a very busy lady. So are the ladies who are actively involved in that community. But to totally abandon the relationship with the people who give you articles to try out, write about, and often give to your readers just because everyone else is seems quite pointless to me.

If you want to get into working with PR, you will at some point get overwhelmed in all the work you put into it. It takes work to promote an item or article, get all your facts together, as well as linking to specific items and gathering photos and other references. But, I enjoy it for the most part. I'm a stay home mom with nothing other than my children to keep me company throughout the day. I started writing here and there, never even knowing how huge moms in the online communit, specifically blogging, had become. I didn't even know about writing reviews and giveaways and the like until about 2 months ago.

I wanted to get involved too. It seemed like fun, like something I could do in my spare time. As a mother of three children, I have experience with products that relate to family and wanted to do something with my free time, besides cleaning the house. I quickly learned how much work these ladies have put into their blog, just in that area alone. I have much respect for these ladies and what they have accomplished.

This blackout has nothing to do with hating PR. I know the ladies who are participating love to work with companies and what goes with that. But, I think you should take a break when you NEED it, not just do it because everyone else is. You should be able to say "Hey, I need a time out, I'll write about what I WANT for a few days." Actually putting all that's needed into each and every review, giveaway, etc. is like a job. Sometimes you have a deadline to meet, especially when you know you have 6 other posts like it this week. And, most often, you don't get paid for all the work you put into that post. Yes, you sometimes get a product for free, but with all the work you put into it, it's really not free.

I don't think people should bash on this whole thing. I think it's great for those ladies who are burnt out. I don't think it's good that they couldn't call this out on their own time though. I think this event should make you think more about the blog you started out as, and sometimes take a break from the PR and post more on what you were in the beginning. Whether that be a foodie blog, kids activities, family, or scrapbook blog. You should always make time for YOU.

I myself will not be participating in the blackout. One, I don't want to do it just because everyone else is, and quite frankly I'm not welcome in that community anyways. Two, I'm having a back to school bash that week. And, I like being busy. PR has given me the opportunity to learn of new and cool gadgets and technology that I would have never known about if not for them.

Little ones will love the combination of Barney fun, on screen and on the page, and moms will love the incredible value!

I grew up watching Barney, and every one of my kids have been a fan at some point during their young life. Before my son was old enough to watch television, I said I'd never have him watch Barney. But back then, at 8 am you could bet you'd find us planted on the couch singing the infamous "I Love You" song. My daughter, Allie, loves Barney now, and loves the YouTube videos of him. Never should have showed her that! :)

Every time the kids in the park open a book, a new tale begins in Barney’s Book Fair DVD. Reading helps their imaginations grow and inspires the kids to build a make-believe rocket, put on a circus and create their own books.

Using bright, bold colors and a simple story line for young eyes, Barney’s Count to 10 storybook will excite even the youngest readers to count to 10 again and again!

BlogHer '09 Conference Friday Day Two

I sleep through my alarm, my hubby has to wake me up. It's like 6am, I'm hurrying to get in the shower, make-up on, and get dressed. Being the early morning person that I'm not, I'm finally out the door, with hubby, to grab my conference pass.

I sign in and get a cool swag bag, loaded with goodies. My favorite is my new Mr. Potato Head, of course! I'm starving and decide to go ahead and grab some breakfast at a great restaurant a few blocks from the hotel, the name I haven't a clue. I have the gourmet pancakes, which are too die for. And, it's in our budget, so it's all good. I have to hurry back to get to the newbie breakfast and Speed dating. I met around 15 bloggers during this time, all of which I myself have never heard of. The location of BlogHer '10 was also announced, it'll be in New York! I'm kinda iffy on this one...

I head on down to the Expo hall, just to browse around by myself. Well, really, to wake up. My hubby calls and tells me what a great time he's having, and blah, blah, blah. I've been in the Expo booth for almost an hour, and am dying for a cigarette. I meet up with my hubby and he convinces me to come join him. Definitely not what I planned!

I can't wait to show you all the awesome pics of Chicago. If you've never been, I'm telling you it is one of the most beautiful places to go for a summer vacation. I'll show you when this dang camera decides to load on my slow computer.

One word of advice if you plan to go to BlogHer and are thinking are bringing your hubby along. DONT! I missed everything that happened during the conference time just visiting the beautiful places around town. Am I dissapointed? No, not really. I probably will never go to Chicago again. I know there will be a BlogHer every year. If I do happen to go to the conference in New York next year, I will go alone. I was so bummed that my husband was enjoying the city, that I just had to go with him.

We went to the Navy Pier for a while that evening and then went to Chicago's Big Bar. We'd heard a lot about the big fishbowl drinks, and decided we'd try one since we were away from the kiddos. By the time I got to the hotel, I can't remember anything that happened! I know we went to the Type a Mom conference and I think it was the Mommy Needs a Cocktail Party. I actually got to talk to @typeamom which was really cool. For some reason, I always feel like the big bloggers like her are "too good" to talk to me. Not the case at all! She is the sweetest thing!

I met many other cool people too. I'll tell you more about them in a later post. Me and my hubby got a little bit tipsy that night and went on upstairs and past out. Not like me at all! Hubby, yes. Me, no.

BlogHer '09 Conference Thursday Day One

BlogHer was awesome. Chicago is breath taking. I had made a plan before I left last Thursday, but nothing went the way I thought it would! My flight was supposed to get in around 4:00 pm, and it did. Due to lightning, I had to wait an hour on my luggage! That put me at around 5:30-ish. I actually flew with 2 ladies that I met pre-BlogHer, how cool? We all pitched in to ride the shuttle to our hotel. To our luck, Obama gets in the same time, so we are actually in this little van for like 2 hours! Not the best idea...

I get into the hotel at 8PM. This means I have missed the parties I had so wanted to go to at that time, especially the Johnson party. Ohh, well! Couldn't do anything about it. Me and hubby head up to our room, on the 8th floor. It is absolutely beautiful. We are facing the river, and also the hotel where Obama is staying. We have pics of all his secret service. I'm trying to get the pics of my camera, but the dang thing is taking sooo long!

We're supposed to meet Chelsea, from JVC, who actually made my whole trip possible(THANKS SO MUCH!!) at 8:10 in the lobby. Thank god I wore my nice clothes on the plane! I have my hubby to thank for persuading me to do that.

Dinner was at Harey Carey's. It was great! While we are eating, an older man sits down at the next table. Everyone starts going over to his table and taking pics, getting autographs, and the like. I have no clue who this guy is. I feel silly asking, but I do. None of the other 5 ladies at the JVC dinner know who he is either. Upon asking the waiter, we discover this man is a famous baseball player from years back. Very famous in Chicago, naturally he played there. Have you ever heard of Ernie Banks? I had to go over and meet him, and get an autograph for my son. He'll cherish this years from now.

We have around a ten minute conversation. All great, until he asks me did I breastfeed. I was flabergasted to say the least. He's an older man, in his 70's I'd guess, so I don't take it personally. All I can say is No, I'm sorry I didn't.

Anyways, we leave and get to the hotel at around 11pm. I'm tired, we all are. I want see some of the parties, but most are already over. I convince everyone to head over to the 704 party. We're late, and all we see is a lady "auctioning" off sex toys. I feel totally out of place, especially with the JVC ladies with me, so we all decide to call it a night.

So far, nothing has gone as planned, it's now like 1am. I've got to get up extra early b/c I didn't get to pick up my pass that night. So, I set the alarm for 5:30am. I enjoyed my night with the JVC ladies (they are so sweet!) and the other ladies who won the BlogHer sponsorship from them.

I'll post more pics when my camera decides to work with me!
