My oldest son, Caleb, just graduated kindergarten. He has learned to read, and loves it! We want him to keep the reading up during the summer, and have a few tips to help from Wright Group/McGraw-Hill’s author Charlene Cobb.
- Create a summer escape in your home perfect for reading. Make sure there is good light and comfortable seating to entice your kids to spend time there. We have a corner by the boys bedroom filled with pillows and a basket full of books I rotate often.
- Even if your children can read by themselves, take turns reading to each other. This helps build their skills as they listen to your tone and inflection throughout the story or article. Before, during and after you read, talk about the material. Ask you child questions and encourage you child to ask you questions. My son loves to read to his brother and sister. And, in the evenings, we all gather around to listen to a book that I read that they want me to read.
- Whether you are reading to your children or they are reading themselves, plan an event or activity that ties to the reading material. For instance, book reading can lead to picnics, museum and zoo visits, ballgames, or even family vacations. From his school, Caleb has gotten into this huge fascination with birds. So, we'll all look at the book we have with pictures and descriptions of birds, and go out and see if we can find them. We live in the country, so we can often see a variety of birds. Their favorites are the big eagles and hawks.

- Look for opportunities for your child to read. If you have a manual for a new DVD player, ask your child to read you the directions. Grocery lists and “to do” lists are also good items to help kids practice reading in “real life.”
- Even if you are not reading the same books as your children, talk to them about what they are reading. Ask them questions such as what happened in the story or what might happen next, who is their favorite character, or who is the villain. This builds summarization and recall skills, and your interest can help increase their interest.
- Suggest your child read a popular series that has been turned into movies like the Harry Potter or Chronicles of Narnia books. When your child finishes reading the book, rent or go see the movie and discuss how each differed from the other and whether the book or movie was more enjoyable. Or, if your child has a favorite movie, see if you can find any titles about it in a book!
-Try to set aside at least one TV/video-game-free night per week for family reading. Make your family’s favorite snacks, get new books at the library and make it fun!

We use the public library to help set a routine by attending events where there is Storytime for the kids and going every Saturday to check out books to read the coming week.

My favorite childrens books are more vintage ones like Alice In Wonderland and Winnie The Poo and I have read these with my kids. They prefer the books like everything in the Dr. Seuss series as they are short and to the point and they can memorize them.

To keep interest in reading going over the summer, we read outside! We spread out the picnic blanket on the grass and read in the shade when it's too hot to do anything else.
My son and I set aside a bit of time in the evening for reading. It has become such a habit that I do not have to beg him to read, he looks forward to that relaxing time.

Greetings from a fellow mom and the Literacy Ambassador! My greatest tip for reading in the summer is to let your kids see reading with a fantastic purpose. When you get ready to go on vacation or "stacation", let your child surf the web (that's reading too), contact the tourism board at your destination, and read books about the area. Have them come up with an itinerary for your time together!
My favorite children's book is hard to determine but here are a few of the best:
Picture books:
Baa-Choo by Sarah Weeks
Bear Snores on by Karma Wilson
A Sock is a Pocket for Your Toes by Elizabeth Scanlon
Let's Get Ready for Kindergarten! by Stacey Kannenberg
Paint the Wind by Patricia McLaughlin
Chapter Books
The Desperado Who Stole Baseball by John H. Ritter (upper elementary, middle and high school)
Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn
Keeping the Night Watch by Hope Anita Smith
The Moon Over Start by Jerry Pinkney
Peak by Roland Smith
I bought a boxed set of books I loved as a kid and now my kids want to read them.
I would love to win. We incorporat reading time every night before our 3 children go to bed at night. We take turns picking out the story. Thank you for the chance

Right now, my son's favorite book to read is Fox in Socks. My favorite to read is My Car, by Byron Barton.
maryjowyse@yahoo.com
My 3 year old LOVES story time! We take time in the afternoons to read, and I read to him at bedtime too. Sometimes he'll ask me to read to him multiple times during the day too!
We homeschool year around so our schedule doesn't really ever change. We have special reading time set aside each day where we read as a family and then everyone has quiet reading time to read silently.
My grandson is signed up for the Summer Reading Program at the local library this summer.
lgrieser(at)sbcglobal(dot)net
My daughter loves to read so we just spend a lot of time at the library and reading to each other.
I keep books in the car.
If you buy books that spark their interest, they will read!
I think reading together is the key. I taught English for 6 years and you could always tell the kids whose parents read with them.
I am so blessed that my kids love to read. I just make sure I make the time for them.
denise_22315(at)yahoo(dot)com
My one year old looks at books on his own! I do try to get new books from the library each week.

My children participate in the local library's summer reading program. They just finished their first "safari path" They are so excited because they each got a ticket to go to the local children's museum and a new toy from the prize box. Now they are so excited to get their books out and read.
Thanks for the giveaway and have a great summer reading.
We visit the library as much as we can and join their programs.
erma.hurtt@sbcglobal.net
We play audio books on the way to weekend visits and on the vacation drives. Then at restaurant stops we do quizzes on the chapters we've heard and give prizes of money to spend on the trips.
My mother just took me to the library during the summer when I was a kid. Normally, libraries host fun events during the summer that make reading fun.
clarkmurdock@yahoo.com
I take my kids to the library & help them choose books about whatever it is that they are interested in at the time.
My kids earn video game time by reading.
We go to the library every other week and each time we go we have a different theme. So one week we'll get only books about bugs or with bugs in them, then next time baseball, etc. It makes it fun and he's not always reading the same books over and over again.
I Subscriber via email.

My favorite books to read are any Dr. Seuss books. Especially the Places you'll go. My sons favorite books to read are anything Curious George.

We "get carded" every summer- meaning we hit the public library with our own "cards". Each of my boys loves to fill their bag with books, dvds, and even Cds for car rides! We save money, enjoy our lazy library days, and read just to read!
My kids love to read so it's not too hard! We go to the library and pick out books about subjects they're interested in or similar to other books they've liked and we ALWAYS do the summer reading program at the library!
Thanks.
